Poison by intravenous route. Moderately toxic by ingestion. Human systemic effects by ingestion: nausea or vomiting, kidney damage and decreased urine volume or anuria. Mutation data reported. Used as a diuretic, uricosuric and antihypertensive. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl⁻ and SO_x.
