Safety

A deadly human poison by unspecified route. Experimental poison by ingestion, skin contact, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, parenteral, intratracheal, and intraduodenal routes. Human systemic effects by rectal route: hallucinations, distorted perceptions, nausea or vomiting. Human teratogenic effects by ingestion: developmental abnormalities of the cardiovascular system. Human blood pressure effects. Can be absorbed by intact skin. An experimental teratogen. Experimental reproductive effects. “Nicotinism,” poisoning by nicotine, is characterized by stimulation and subsequent depression of the central and autonomic nervous systems. Death can result from respiratory paralysis. Mutation data reported. Used as a pesticide and in veterinary medicine as an external parasiticide. Combustible when exposed to heat or flame. Moderately explosive in the form of vapor when exposed to heat or flame. Can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use alcohol foam, dry chemical, CO₂. When heated to decomposition it emits NO_x, CO, and other highly toxic fumes.
