Safety

Poison by intravenous route. Moderately toxic by ingestion, subcutaneous, and intraperitoneal routes. Human systemic effects by intravenous route: euphoria, hallucinations and distorted perceptions, and toxic psychosis. Experimental reproductive effects. Caution: Violent withdrawal symptoms may occur in narcotic addicts. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of NO_x and HCl. See also (−)-MORPHINE.
