Safety Poison by intraperitoneal route. Moderately toxic by intravenous and subcutaneous routes. Mildly toxic by ingestion. Human systemic effects by ingestion and possibly other routes: wakefulness, sleep, altered sleep time, hallucinations, distorted perceptions, tremors, convulsions, and coma. An antibiotic used in the treatment of human pulmonary tuberculosis. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx.
