Safety
It is poorly soluble in water and thus is not absorbed efficiently by ingestion. Many hafnium compounds are poisons. A spontaneously combustible flammable solid and dangerous fire hazard. The powder ignites with friction, heat, sparks, or exposure to air. The damp powder burns explosively. The powder may self-explode. The powder can explode when heated with nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, sulfur, nonmetals, or halogens. May explode on contact with hot nitric acid and other oxidants.
