Safety

Poison by intraperitoneal route. Moderately toxic by subcutaneous route. Mildly toxic by inhalation. Mutation data reported. A skin, eye, and mucous membrane irritant. Narcotic in high concentration. Flammable when exposed to heat or flame, a preparative hazard. Will react with water or steam to produce toxic and corrosive fumes; can react vigorously with oxidizing materials. Incompatible with silver chlorite. To fight fire, use water, CO₂, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits highly toxic fumes of I⁻. See also IODIDES.
