PET fibers are made by reacting ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid or its methyl ester in the presence of an antimony catalyst. The reaction is carried out at high temperature and vacuum to achieve the high molecular weights needed to form useful fibers. Polyester fibers are strong and are resistant to stretching & shrinking. These are resistant to most chemicals and have quick drying characteristics. Polyester fibers are used in every form of clothing, carpets, curtains, sheets, pillows, wall coverings, and upholstery. These are also used in the manufacture of hoses, power belting, ropes, nets, tire cord, floppy disk liners, and furniture.
